Nearer my God to Thee
This song has been going through my head today, reminding me what is important. If you want to hear the tune, you can go here. These are the words:
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
- Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee,
-
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
- Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
- Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee,
-
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- There let the way appear steps unto heav'n;
- All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
- Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
- Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
- So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,
-
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
- Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
- Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee,
-
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
- There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest,
- There in my Savior’s love, perfectly blest;
- Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.
-
- Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

This hymn always reminds me of being in the cast of the high school play, "It's a Wonderful LIfe" - the cast sang the hymn during the funeral scene of the play.
I have always loved the lines of the 2nd and 3rd verses, which make an allusion to Jacob's dream. I have come to appreciate the dilemmas in life where we are "wrestling with the angel." I'm not saying I LIKE those dilemmas, but I am gaining appreciation of them.
It has only been in the last year or so that the second line of the first verse has had personal meaning for me.
"E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;"
I think that sometimes we get so caught up in our trials that we forget that each one has the potential to bring us closer to God, we just have to let that happen, instead of fighting against it.
